4. House at the Black Madonna (Cubist Museum)/
Dům U černé matky Boží

Next point of interest lies on Celetna, on the corner as the street branches into Ovocny trh. As you walk down, notice how many houses have decorations near the door. In Baroque Prague, such signs were used rather than street addresses, and would denote something about the owner or the business conducted there. The House at the Black Madonna, has a Black Madonna statues. There are about 500 such statues in Catholic parts of Europe, leftovers from medieval times when this mysterious aspect of the virgin was cultivated (her features are caucasian but both she and baby Jesus are painted in the blackest paint available. You can read more about this phenomenon here. Of further interest is that the building is a rare example of Cubism and houses the Cubist Museum and a coffee shop where everything is rendered as cubistically as possible. For more details on the museum visit http://www.kubista.cz.
